Stuck valve: If you simply can't turn the valve, which happens often with fixture shut-offs and old-fashioned main shut-offs, you may need to spray the valve with WD-40 and give it time to lubricate before tryingagain.

How do you know if a water valve is open or closed? When the handle of a ball valve is parallel to the valve or pipe, it's open. When it's perpendicular, it's closed. This makes it easy know if a ball valve is open or closed, just by looking at it. The ball valve below is in the open position.

How do I loosen a stuck plumbing fitting? In many cases, though, it is possible to loosen the stuck plumbing fixture.

  1. Tighten the fixture or plumbing nut with a wrench or locking pliers to break the grip of the mineral deposits; then turn in the opposite direction to loosen it.
  2. Apply heat to the stuck fixture or plumbing nut with a hair dryer or heatgun.

Can you repair a gate valve? A malfunctioning gate valve is not difficult to repair, but it is even easier to prevent. These problems are typically caused by mineral buildup, so you should fully close and open your gate valves every few months to clearpotential problems.
