People living near asphalt pavement sealed with coal tar have an elevated risk of cancer, according to a study in the journal Environmental Science and Technology. Much of this calculated excess risk results from exposures in children, age six or younger, to polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) from thesealant.

Why is coal tar good for skin? This medication is used on the skinto treat the itching, scaling, and flaking due to skin conditions such as psoriasis or seborrheic dermatitis. Coal tar belongs to a class of drugs known as keratoplastics. It works by causing the skinto shed dead cells from its top layer and slow down the growth of skin cells.

What are the environmental impacts of coal tar that is used to seal parking lots? In addition to contaminating stormwater, sediment, soil, andhouse dust, PAHs from coal-tar-based sealcoat contaminate air (Figure ? 1I). Several of the lower molecular weight PAHs in coal-tar-based sealcoat are volatile, which is why sealed parking lots and driveways frequently give off a strong-smell.

What is tar made of? Tar is a dark brown or black viscous liquid of hydrocarbons and free carbon, obtained from a wide variety of organic materials through destructive distillation. Tar can be produced from coal, wood, petroleum, or peat. Tar-like products canalso be produced from other forms of organic matter, such as peat.
