Selecting a Spring

  1. Use only the valve springs that will give the correct spring pressure with the valve both on the seat and at maximum lift.
  2. The outside diameter of the recommended valve spring may require that the spring pocket of the head be machined to abigger size.

What causes an engine valve to drop? Many things can cause a valve to drop out. Running the engine too fast (doubtful), backfire (again doubtful), misadjusted valves, weak valve, rotator or keeper. Broken valve spring.

What happens when valve spring tension is too low? If the spring pressures are too low, acondition called “Valve Float” will occur. Follow this link to learn more about Valve Float.

What are double valve springs? Double springs allow for higher spring rates with the same spring thickness thus allowing higher lift without coil bind or going to a stiffer/harder (more brittle - not sure if that is theright terminolgy) metal.

How long does it take to change valve springs? The labor to pull the exhaust, valve covers, swap the springs, retainers, seals and locks, adjust the valves and replace the covers and exhaust should run about 5-6 hours perengine.
