The sand particles are stuck and can't move through each other. The larger contaminants (like other dirt, plant matter etc) get "filtered" by these sands and rocks. As the water flows down it will meet back up at the bottom and down into whatever you are filtering itinto.

Can you filter viruses from water? When people neglect to dispose of their waste properly, viruses can be present in the natural water sources. Viruses are indeed extremely small. To treat them, you must use a purifier (or boil your water). By definition, a purifier removes all three waterborne threats: protozoa, bacteria andviruses.

How is contaminated water treated? The following are the common methods of water purification.

  1. Boiling. This is a reliable way to purify water.
  2. Use of Iodine solution, tablets or crystals. This is an effective and more convenient method.
  3. Use chlorine drops. Chlorine has the ability to kill bacteria in water.
  4. Use water filter.
  5. Use Ultraviolet Light.

What is the difference between water filter and purifier? Simply put, the main difference lies in the level of protection they provide. Generally speaking, awater filter is designed to remove waterborne protozoa and bacteria, but not viruses. A water purifier is designed to combat all three classes of microbes, including viruses. Why the two treatment device options? S
