Fuel Tank Venting. In order to breathe, your tank must have a vent somewhere that will relieve both vacuum and pressure. Gasoline expands in volume as it warms up and shrinks in volume as it cools down. The fuel level of your tank changes throughout the day, even if you are not drivingit.

How do you clean out a gas tank? Remove fuel pump from tank (avoid letting residual debris fall into the tank). Insert hose into fuel tank and begin pouring a stream of clean, hot water. While water is filling, spray mild detergent in the tank. If opening allows, use a brush to loosen debris from the sides of the tank.

What does a fuel tank breather valve do? A Tank Vent Valve should allow air to enter the tank to replace the volume of fuel volume exiting the tank without allowing fuel tobe lost through the vent system.

Should gas tank hisses when opened? The hiss is a normal phenomenon, ideally keep the tanks at more than 1/2 full to keep the fume formation and vapor loss at check. Hiss means your fuel tank vapor system is working properly and not releasing harmful fumesout.
