Green mantids hide in green foliage, waiting for prey towander into range. Brown mantids do the same thing, only on brown foliage and stems. The camouflage not only protects mantids from predators, but allows them to remain almost invisible to their prey.

Where did praying mantis get its name? The praying mantis is named for its prominent front legs, which are bent andheld together at an angle that suggests the position of prayer. By any name, these fascinating insects are formidable predators.

Can Praying Mantis jump? They don't exactly leap tall buildings in a single bound, but praying mantises do have something akin to superpowers. Young mantises do not have wings, so evolution has bestowed them with the remarkable ability to leap from point A to point B in a tenth of a second—less than the blink of aneye.

Do praying mantis fly or jump? Praying mantises, before they mature, don't have wings to fly, or to help them stabilize their bodies in a jump. What they do have is an uncanny ability to control the spin of their body with complex and coordinated movements of forelegs, hind legs and abdomen in a leap that takes less than a tenth of asecond.
