Themes and MeaningsAt the most accessible and perhaps most melodramatic level, Amadeus concerns the mystery of creative genius. Here Shaffer draws heavily on biographical legends in order to suggest that Mozart's greatness was more than human andthe man himself touched by God.

Where was Amadeus filmed? Prague

What is the story of Amadeus? Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart (Tom Hulce) is a remarkably talented young Viennese composer who unwittingly finds a fierce rival in the disciplined and determined Antonio Salieri (F. Murray Abraham). Resenting Mozart for both his hedonistic lifestyle and his undeniable talent, the highly religious Salieri is gradually consumed by his jealousy and becomes obsessed with Mozart's downfall, leading to a devious scheme that has dire consequences forboth men.

Who killed Mozart? An early rumor addressing the causeof Mozart's death was that he was poisoned by his colleague Antonio Salieri. This rumor, however, was not proven to be true as the signs of illness Mozart displayed did not indicate poisoning.

Who is the protagonist in Amadeus? Antonio Salieri is the only person alive who can hear Mozart's music for what it truly is. Further, he wants more than anything to be the voice of God himself. Mozart, despite his shortcomings, is the only focus of that divine music. Salieri is fated to hear in Mozart's music his own shortcomings.
